Starting out in remote CAD and BIM work

Can I get a remote CAD job with no experience?

Yes, but not in BIM coordination. Entry-level remote work concentrates in 2D drafting, redlines, drawing cleanup and paper-to-CAD conversion, typically $18–$30 per hour or its local equivalent. Employers screen on drawing quality, so three or four complete, standards-compliant sheet sets in a portfolio outweigh a long CV with no output attached.

Which country do I need to live in?

For work-from-anywhere contracts, none in particular. Studios in the US, UK, Netherlands and the Gulf regularly hire remote drafters and modelers based in Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, India and the Philippines. What decides it is overlap hours with the client's team, written communication, and whether your files hold up to their standards.

Which software should I learn first?

AutoCAD to get hired, Revit to get paid more. AutoCAD appears in the largest number of entry-level openings; Revit and BIM coordination carry the higher bands, $35–$95 per hour. Learning Revit second, on top of solid drafting discipline, is the progression most of the higher-paid people on this board actually followed.

Is part-time or freelance work realistic while employed?

Often yes. A lot of CAD and BIM work is priced per sheet, per model or per render rather than hourly, which fits evenings and weekends — as long as you agree a weekly hour ceiling and a delivery date you can hold. Late delivery costs repeat work far more than a modest rate does.
