How to convert DWG to PDF (properly, with your plot styles)

DWG is a closed binary format, so no browser can read it and any site that claims to convert it in-page is uploading your drawing to a server. Here is how to do it correctly in AutoCAD — and how to get a browser-side conversion if the drawing is not confidential-critical.

Why there is no uploader on this page

DWG is a closed format that no browser can read, so an in-page converter would have to send your file to a server. The procedure below does the job properly in the application that owns the format — and where a browser-side route exists, it is linked underneath.

Converting DWG to PDF, step by step

1Open the drawing and switch to the layout you actually want to issue (not model space).
2Type PLOT. Under Printer/plotter choose DWG To PDF.pc3 — or AutoCAD PDF (High Quality Print).
3Set the paper size to match the layout's title block, and Plot area to Layout.
4Choose your plot style table (CTB/STB) so lineweights and screening are respected — this is the step web converters cannot do.
5Tick Plot transparency if the drawing uses transparent hatches, preview, then plot.
6To batch a whole set, use PUBLISH with a sheet list instead of plotting one layout at a time.

What to watch out for

For a browser-only route: Save As → AutoCAD DXF in AutoCAD, then use our DXF to PDF converter, which runs locally and never uploads the file.

Why can't this page convert my DWG directly?

DWG's specification is proprietary and version-specific; there is no license-clean JavaScript reader for it. We would have to upload your drawing to a server-side converter, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

What is the closest free option?

Save As DXF in AutoCAD, DWG TrueView or a free viewer, then run our DXF to PDF tool — the file stays on your machine the whole time.

Why does my PDF look thin or washed out?

Almost always the plot style table. Pick the CTB you normally plot with instead of None, and check Plot object lineweights.

How do I produce one PDF for a whole drawing set?

Use PUBLISH with a DSD sheet list and tick Multi-sheet file. Plotting layouts one at a time and merging afterwards loses the sheet ordering.
