MicroStation DGN version converter

Can it be saved down?

Yes, with limits. All MicroStation releases since V8 share the V8 DGN format, so most version problems come up when someone needs the old V7 DGN format or a DWG file. Both are Save As options.

MicroStation's DGN format changed once in a big way: V8 (2001) replaced V7. Every release since, including CONNECT Edition, still writes V8 DGN, so newer MicroStation files usually open in older V8-family releases. Real version trouble comes when a client or agency system still needs V7 DGN, or when the receiver uses AutoCAD.

The procedure that works

  1. 1Check what the receiver needs: V8 DGN (most cases), V7 DGN (old systems) or DWG (AutoCAD users).
  2. 2For V7: File → Save As, choose the MicroStation V7 DGN file type, and review the conversion settings before saving.
  3. 3For AutoCAD: File → Save As, choose DWG and pick the DWG version the receiver's AutoCAD can read.
  4. 4Save reference files the same way, as each one is a separate file.
  5. 5Open the converted copy and check levels, text and references before sending it.

Need a certified CAD/BIM specialist to modify or detail this drawing?

TaskBider drafters, detailers and BIM coordinators work remotely and every listing shows the pay. Typical published range for this work: $18–$45/hr.

What the file loses

  • • V7 DGN supports far fewer levels than V8 and has size and precision limits, so large or detailed V8 designs may need levels merged or the model simplified.
  • • Newer element types without a V7 or DWG equivalent are converted to simpler graphics.
  • • Line styles, fonts and cell libraries may need mapping when saving to DWG.

Questions

Can an older MicroStation open a CONNECT Edition DGN?

Usually yes, because CONNECT Edition still uses the V8 DGN format. Features added after the receiver's release may display only as graphics.

How do I convert DGN to DWG?

In MicroStation use File → Save As and choose DWG. In AutoCAD you can also import a V8 DGN with DGNIMPORT.
