BricsCAD version converter

Can it be saved down?

Yes. BricsCAD saves in DWG, and Save As lets you pick an older DWG format version, so a newer drawing can be opened in an older BricsCAD or AutoCAD.

BricsCAD and AutoCAD share the DWG format, and a DWG format version covers several releases of each program. So the version that matters is the DWG format the receiver can read, not the BricsCAD release number. Ask which AutoCAD or BricsCAD release they run, then save to that format or an older one.

The procedure that works

  1. 1Ask the receiver which AutoCAD or BricsCAD release they use.
  2. 2In BricsCAD choose File → Save As, open the file-type list and pick the matching older DWG version (for example AutoCAD 2013 DWG).
  3. 3Save under a new file name so the working drawing stays in the current format.
  4. 4For a whole folder of drawings, the free ODA File Converter batch-converts DWG files to an older format version.
  5. 5Open the saved copy once to check that xrefs, fonts and layouts came through.

Need a certified CAD/BIM specialist to modify or detail this drawing?

TaskBider drafters, detailers and BIM coordinators work remotely and every listing shows the pay. Typical published range for this work: $18–$45/hr.

What the file loses

  • • Objects that the older format does not support may be converted to simpler objects or proxy graphics.
  • • BricsCAD-specific features such as BIM and Mechanical data are only kept as displayable geometry in programs that do not support them.
  • • External references are not converted automatically; save each referenced DWG down as well.

Questions

Can AutoCAD open BricsCAD drawings?

Yes. BricsCAD drawings are standard DWG files. If the receiver runs an older AutoCAD, save the drawing to that release's DWG format with Save As first.

Which DWG version should I save to?

The newest format the receiver can read. Saving further back than needed only increases the chance of objects being simplified.
