3ds Max version converter

Can it be saved down?

Yes, within limits. 3ds Max's Save As can write a scene for a limited number of earlier releases (the dialog lists which). Further back than that, export FBX and rebuild materials.

Visualisation teams hit this constantly: a freelancer works in the latest 3ds Max, the studio is a few releases behind. Unlike Revit, 3ds Max can save down — but only a few releases, and plugins and renderer versions matter as much as the file version itself.

The procedure that works

  1. 1File → Save As, then open the "Save as type" list and choose the older 3ds Max release. Save under a new name so the original stays intact.
  2. 2Before saving down, collect the scene with Resource Collector (or Archive) so textures and proxies travel with it.
  3. 3Check plugin versions on the receiving machine — V-Ray, Corona, Forest Pack and RailClone objects only load if the same or compatible plugin build is installed.
  4. 4Older than the dialog allows: export FBX (geometry, cameras, lights, animation), open in the older release and re-apply materials.
  5. 5Open the saved-down file on the target machine and render one test frame before sending the final package.

Need a certified CAD/BIM specialist to modify or detail this drawing?

TaskBider drafters, detailers and BIM coordinators work remotely and every listing shows the pay. Typical published range for this work: $18–$45/hr.

What the file loses

  • • Features introduced after the target release are dropped or collapsed — new modifiers can bake down to an editable mesh or poly.
  • • Renderer materials depend on the plugin version, not the 3ds Max version; a mismatch shows as black or missing materials.
  • • Through FBX: renderer-specific materials, scatter objects and most modifier stacks are lost.

Questions

How many versions back can 3ds Max save?

A limited number of releases — the exact list is in the Save as type dropdown of your release. Anything older needs an FBX export.

Why are my materials black after opening the file?

The renderer plugin on that machine is missing or older than the one the materials were made with. Install the matching V-Ray or Corona build.
