Tekla Structures version converter

Can it be saved down?

No native downgrade exists. Once a model is opened and saved in a newer Tekla Structures version it cannot be used in an older one; the working routes are IFC or a backup from before the upgrade.

On steel detailing projects the fabricator, detailer and engineer often run different Tekla versions. Tekla upgrades a model when it is saved in a newer release, and older versions refuse it. The fix is to agree a version up front and keep backups — the routes below cover the case where that did not happen.

The procedure that works

  1. 1Look for a backup: Tekla keeps model backups and many teams archive the model folder before upgrading — that copy is the only true older-version model.
  2. 2Coordination only: export IFC (Reference model) from the newer version and insert it as a reference model in your older version.
  3. 3Drawings: ask for DWG or PDF drawings, not the model, if you only need to check or mark up.
  4. 4Multi-user models: every user must be on the same version — upgrade the server and all clients together.
  5. 5Prevent the repeat: put the Tekla version (including service pack) in the detailing contract or BIM Execution Plan.

What the file loses

  • • Through IFC: you get geometry and profile data as a reference model; connections, numbering, drawings and custom components are not editable.
  • • Shop drawings never transfer through IFC and must be produced again in the receiving model.
  • • Model-specific settings and custom components made in the newer version may not load in an older one.

Questions

Can I save a Tekla model to an older version?

No. Tekla Structures has no save-to-older-version command. Use a pre-upgrade backup, or work from an IFC reference model.

Is IFC good enough for fabrication?

For checking and clash detection, yes. For numbering, shop drawings and NC files you need the native model in your version.
