Formula

tons = L(ft) × W(ft) × thickness(in) ÷ 12 × density(lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000

145 lb/ft³ is a common planning density for compacted hot-mix asphalt. Base course, edges and waste are not included.

Questions

How many tons of asphalt do I need?

Multiply area in ft² by thickness in feet, then by density (about 145 lb/ft³), and divide by 2,000.

How thick should a driveway be?

Residential driveways are often specified around 2–3 in of surface course over a prepared base, but follow your engineer or local spec.
