Revit version converter (and why downgrading is different)

Can it be saved down?

No tool downgrades an RVT — Autodesk publishes no downgrade path and no third party can write the format. What works is re-issuing geometry through IFC, DWG or a rebuilt model, or getting the file from the author's earlier-version backup.

Opening a Revit 2025 model in Revit 2022 gives "the file was created in a newer version" and stops there. The upgrade is one-way by design: each release changes the parametric database schema, and older versions cannot interpret it. Anything advertising an RVT downgrade converter either recreates geometry in another format or uploads your model. Here is what a BIM coordinator actually does.

The procedure that works

  1. 1Ask the author for their journal backups first — Revit keeps .0001.rvt files, and a copy saved before the upgrade is the only true earlier-version model.
  2. 2Need coordination only: have the model exported to IFC (ISO 19650 setup) and link that into your older Revit. Geometry, categories and key parameters survive; families and constraints do not.
  3. 3Need drawings only: ask for a DWG export per sheet or view and link those into your older project as backgrounds.
  4. 4Need to keep working natively: rebuild in your version — copy/paste elements from a linked IFC or DWG, or reload the manufacturer families and re-place them. Budget this as real modelling time.
  5. 5Prevent the repeat: agree one Revit release for the whole project team in the BIM Execution Plan, and never upgrade a shared central model without written sign-off.

What the file loses

  • • Through IFC: families become generic elements, dimensional constraints and formulas are gone, and view templates, schedules and sheets do not transfer.
  • • Through DWG: you get 2D linework only — no parameters, no schedules, no clash geometry.
  • • Worksets, revisions, phasing and design options never survive either route; they have to be re-created.
  • • Once a central model is upgraded, everyone on it must upgrade — the file cannot be handed back to an older release.

Questions

Is there any way to downgrade a Revit file?

Not as a native RVT. Autodesk provides no downgrade and the format is closed, so the working routes are an IFC or DWG export, or a model saved before the upgrade.

What about the online Revit downgrade services?

They either send you an IFC or a rebuilt model, or they upload your project to a server. Neither is a format conversion, and uploading a client model is usually a contract breach.

Will an IFC export let me keep modelling?

You can model around it, not inside it. Linked IFC geometry is not parametric, so anything you need to edit has to be re-created with native families.

How do I stop this happening on the next project?

Fix the Revit release in the BIM Execution Plan before modelling starts, keep every consultant on it for the project's life, and require written approval before any central-model upgrade.
