Civil 3D version converter

Can it be saved down?

Partly. The DWG container saves down like any AutoCAD drawing, but surfaces, alignments, profiles and corridors are Civil 3D objects — in an older release or plain AutoCAD they arrive as non-editable proxy graphics.

Civil 3D stores its intelligence in custom objects that live inside the DWG. Save down and the container converts, but the object definitions have nowhere to go, so the recipient sees proxy graphics they can view and plot but not edit. That is why highway and drainage packages are issued as exports, not as saved-down drawings.

The procedure that works

  1. 1For viewing and plotting: SAVEAS to the target DWG release, then have the recipient set PROXYGRAPHICS on so the objects still display.
  2. 2For editable linework: use EXPORTTOAUTOCAD (or the AeccExportToAutoCAD command), which explodes civil objects into plain AutoCAD entities in a new drawing.
  3. 3For surfaces: issue a LandXML export — it carries alignments, profiles and surface triangulation between releases and between software vendors.
  4. 4For contractor setting-out: export points to CSV/PENZD and surfaces to LandXML or a machine-control format rather than sending the drawing.
  5. 5Keep the native Civil 3D drawing as the record file and issue the exports; never let the exploded copy become the working model.

What the file loses

  • • Surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, pipe networks and pressure networks lose their definitions and become static graphics.
  • • Labels stop being dynamic — they no longer update if the geometry is edited downstream.
  • • Data shortcuts and reference templates break; the recipient must re-establish their own project references.
  • • Exploded output can be very heavy, so purge and audit before issuing.

Questions

Why does my Civil 3D drawing open empty in AutoCAD?

The civil objects are proxies and proxy display is switched off. Set PROXYGRAPHICS to 1 and regenerate, or issue an EXPORTTOAUTOCAD copy instead.

Can an older Civil 3D edit my surface?

No. Civil object versions follow the release, so an earlier Civil 3D sees proxies too. Issue LandXML and let them rebuild the surface natively.

Does LandXML keep my corridor?

It keeps alignments, profiles and surfaces, not the corridor assembly. Corridors have to be rebuilt from those inputs.
