CAD and BIM certifications, with real costs

Six certifications cover almost everything asked for in CAD, BIM and detailing job adverts. Each page below gives the provider, exam format, approximate published fee, the syllabus, a preparation plan and a straight answer on whether it changes your pay. Fees move and vary by country, so confirm the current price with the provider before booking.

• Revit certification

  The most widely requested software certification in BIM hiring. It tests whether you can actually build and document a coordinated Revit model under time pressure, not whether you can recite menu locations.

• AutoCAD certification

  The baseline drafting credential. Useful for drafters early in a career, or for anyone whose experience is hard to verify because their portfolio is under NDA.

• Civil 3D certification

  The strongest of the Autodesk credentials in pay terms, because Civil 3D competence is scarcer than Revit or AutoCAD competence and infrastructure programmes pay accordingly.

• BIM certification

  Unlike the Autodesk exams, this one is about process rather than software: IFC, information requirements, common data environments and open standards. It is the credential that matters for coordination and management roles.

• ISO 19650 certification

  The standard that most European and Gulf public projects are contracted against. Employers hiring information managers and BIM managers name it directly in the job description.

• Tekla certification

  Narrow but valuable. Steel detailing has the highest published rates of any drafting speciality on our dataset, and fabricators trust demonstrable Tekla output over generic CAD credentials.
