Formula
tons = L(ft) × W(ft) × thickness(in) ÷ 12 × density(lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000145 lb/ft³ is a common planning density for compacted hot-mix asphalt. Base course, edges and waste are not included.
Worked examples
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| 50 × 12 ft driveway, 3 in | 150 ft³ × 145 ÷ 2000 = 10.88 tons |
| 100 × 60 ft lot, 2 in | 1,000 ft³ → 72.5 tons |

| Thickness | Tons |
|---|---|
| 1 in | 6.04 |
| 1.5 in | 9.06 |
| 2 in | 12.08 |

Questions
How many tons of asphalt do I need?
Multiply area in ft² by thickness in feet, then by density (about 145 lb/ft³), and divide by 2,000.
How thick should a driveway be?
Residential driveways are often specified around 2–3 in of surface course over a prepared base, but follow your engineer or local spec.
