What the role involves
A steel detailer turns the engineer's design model into fabrication and erection information: connection details to AISC or Eurocode requirements, assembly and single-part drawings, anchor bolt plans, erection drawings, bills of material and CNC files for the shop. The detailer carries RFIs back to the engineer, tracks approvals and reissues revisions as the design settles. Core tools are Tekla Structures, SDS/2 and Advance Steel, with AutoCAD for markups and legacy drawings.
- · Connection detailing and assembly modelling to code
- · Shop drawings, erection drawings and anchor bolt plans
- · Bills of material and CNC output (NC1, DSTV)
- · RFI management and revision control with the engineer of record
- · Checking another detailer's output — the step that raises the rate most
Frequently asked questions
- What do remote steel detailer jobs pay in 2026?
- Remote steel detailer jobs pay $58,000–$95,000 a year with North American and Western European employers in 2026, and $30–$70 per hour on freelance contracts. Detailers based in India, Egypt, Morocco or the Philippines serving those same fabricators typically bill $14–$35 per hour for comparable shop-drawing scope.
- Can steel detailing be done fully remotely?
- Yes. Steel detailing is model-and-drawing work: detailers author connections and shop drawings in Tekla Structures, SDS/2 or Advance Steel and exchange them with the fabricator through a cloud environment. Shop visits are occasional, not routine, so most 2026 postings are fully remote with a few hours of daily overlap for RFI turnaround.
- What software do steel detailer jobs require?
- Tekla Structures is the most requested, followed by SDS/2 and Autodesk Advance Steel; AutoCAD is still expected for markups and legacy drawings. Fabricator-facing roles also ask for familiarity with CNC output such as NC1 and DSTV files, plus the relevant code — AISC in North America, Eurocode in Europe.
- Is a steel detailer the same as a structural detailer?
- Steel detailing is one branch of structural detailing. A structural detailer may cover steel, reinforced concrete (rebar) and precast; a steel detailer works specifically on fabricated steelwork — connections, assemblies, anchor bolt plans and erection drawings. Employers use the titles interchangeably in adverts, so search both.
- How much experience do steel detailer jobs need?
- Most adverts ask for three to seven years, because connection detailing carries fabrication and erection risk. Junior detailing roles exist from about a year when the candidate can show checked shop drawings, an assembly model and evidence of working to AISC or Eurocode requirements under a checker.
- What raises a steel detailer's rate fastest?
- Connection design competence, checking responsibility rather than production only, and clean CNC-ready output. Detailers who can take a design model to approved shop drawings with few RFIs, and who can check another detailer's work, move to the top of the band far faster than those who add software titles.
