Revit Level command
Shortcut: LLDatum
Creates a horizontal datum that hosts elements, drives plan views and constrains walls, floors and columns.
Syntax
LL → draw in a section or elevation → rename → set the elevationStep by step
- Open a section or elevation view — levels cannot be drawn in plan.
- Type LL.
- Draw the level, keeping Make Plan View ticked if a plan is needed.
- Rename it to the project standard, accepting the prompt to rename corresponding views.
- Type the exact elevation in the level's temporary dimension or properties.
Adding a mezzanine level
In the north elevation draw Level 1M at +3600, allow the plan view to be created, then set the mezzanine walls' base constraint to it. Constrained elements follow any later change to that height.
Common mistakes
- Copying a level rather than using the Level tool, which skips creating plan views.
- Renaming a level without renaming its views, leaving mismatched sheet names.
- Moving levels while elements are unconstrained, which silently leaves geometry behind.
Questions
Why can't I draw a level in a plan view?
Levels are horizontal datums, so they only appear as a line in vertical views. Open a section or elevation to create one.
Do I need to rename views when renaming a level?
Accept the prompt. Matching names keep the browser and sheet references readable for everyone else on the model.
