Revit Join Geometry command
Shortcut: —Modify
Joins two overlapping elements so they share a face and clean up in plan, section and quantities.
Syntax
Modify > Join > Join Geometry → pick first element → pick othersStep by step
- Go to Modify > Join > Join Geometry.
- Tick Multiple Join to join one element to several.
- Click the first element, then each element to join to it.
- Use Switch Join Order if the wrong material cuts through.
- Press Esc to finish.
A wall meeting a column
Join the wall to the concrete column, then Switch Join Order so the column reads as continuous in plan. Quantities also stop double-counting the overlap.
Common mistakes
- Joining hundreds of elements needlessly, which slows the model badly.
- Relying on join to fix a modelling error rather than correcting the geometry.
- Joining across links, which is not supported and needs coordination instead.
Questions
Does Join Geometry affect quantities?
Yes. Joining removes the overlapping volume from one element, so schedules stop double-counting the intersection.
Why does my join make the model slow?
Every join is a computed relationship. Thousands of joins, especially across many levels, are a common cause of sluggish models — unjoin what is not needed for documentation.
