How to get DWG drawings out of an IFC model
IFC holds a 3D model, DWG holds drawings — so this is a modelling-to-documentation step, not a file swap. There are three practical routes depending on what you need.

IFC is a closed format that no browser can read, so an in-page converter would have to send your file to a server. The procedure below does the job properly in the application that owns the format — and where a browser-side route exists, it is linked underneath.
Converting IFC to DWG, step by step
- 1Quick 2D backgrounds: open the IFC in a free viewer that exports DWG/DXF sections (usBIM, BricsCAD BIM, Navisworks with an exporter) and export the section or plan you need.
- 2Full documentation: link the IFC into Revit (Insert → Link IFC) or open it in BricsCAD BIM, set up plan/section views, then export those views to DWG.
- 3Coordination only: keep the IFC and issue a DWG of the grid and setting-out geometry instead of the whole model — smaller and less error-prone.

- Linked IFC in Revit is read-only: you document it, you do not edit it.

Can I convert IFC straight to DWG in one click?
Some tools will dump the 3D geometry into a DWG, but you get a 3D solid soup rather than drawings. Generating views and exporting those is the only route that produces usable sheets.
