How to convert PDF to DWG (and what you'll actually get)
A PDF made from CAD contains vectors that can come back as geometry. A scanned PDF contains pixels and needs tracing. Knowing which one you have saves hours.
Why there is no uploader on this page
PDF is a closed format that no browser can read, so an in-page converter would have to send your file to a server. The procedure below does the job properly in the application that owns the format — and where a browser-side route exists, it is linked underneath.
Converting PDF to DWG, step by step
- 1In AutoCAD, run PDFIMPORT and select the file — vector PDFs come in as lines, polylines, solid fills and TrueType text.
- 2To keep the sheet only as a background, use PDFATTACH instead, then PDFSNAP to snap to its geometry.
- 3Set the scale on import: import, then measure a known dimension and SCALE the imported block by the ratio.
- 4For scanned sheets, attach the image, scale it off a known dimension and retrace — or use raster-to-vector software and expect to clean up.
- 5Finish with layer translation: PDF import invents layer names such as PDF_Geometry.
What to watch out for
- Line weights become polyline widths, not lineweights.
- Text imports as text only when the PDF used TrueType fonts; SHX text arrives as individual line segments.
- Nobody gets a clean, layered, dimensionally trustworthy DWG out of a PDF without checking it against a known dimension.
The fixed-layout sheet format clients and contractors expect for issued drawings.

Questions
Is PDF to DWG conversion accurate?
Geometrically, vector PDFs convert precisely — but the scale is arbitrary until you set it, and layers and text styles are invented. Always verify against a dimension on the sheet.
Can a scanned drawing be converted?
Only by raster-to-vector tracing, which produces approximate geometry. For construction use, retracing over the scaled image is safer and often faster.
Which AutoCAD versions have PDFIMPORT?
AutoCAD 2017 and later. Earlier releases can only attach the PDF as an underlay.
