How to convert STEP to DWG properly
STEP carries real solids; DWG expects drawing entities. Nothing in a browser can read an ISO 10303 solid model, so every honest route runs through a CAD package — and which one you pick decides whether the DWG arrives as an editable 3D solid or as flat plotted linework.

- 1AutoCAD (full, not LT): IMPORT the .step or .stp file. Solids arrive as 3D solids you can section and dimension, then SAVEAS to DWG.
- 2Need 2D drawings: with the solid imported, use VIEWBASE to generate base, projected and section views, then plot or issue those sheets.
- 3No AutoCAD: FreeCAD opens STEP and exports DWG/DXF for free; BricsCAD and Fusion 360 do the same with better tolerance handling.
- 4Assembly files: import into the mechanical CAD package first (SolidWorks, Inventor), fix any missing mates, then export a single consolidated solid.
- 5Confirm units on import — STEP records millimetres or inches explicitly, and a mismatch scales the model by 25.4.

- AutoCAD LT cannot import STEP at all; it has no 3D modelling engine.
- Imported solids have no parametric history — features, sketches and constraints are gone, which is expected from a neutral format.
- Surfaces that fail to knit arrive as open surface bodies. Re-export from the source as STEP AP214 and try again before repairing by hand.
- For manufacturing, keep STEP as the record file and treat the DWG as a derived deliverable.

STEP or IGES for a DWG conversion?
STEP. It exchanges watertight solids, while IGES exchanges surfaces that often need knitting before they are usable.
