How to convert STL to STEP (mesh to solid)
This is not a file conversion — it is a remodelling job. STL holds triangles, STEP holds exact solids and surfaces. Anything that claims a one-click STL to STEP is either wrapping the triangles in a useless faceted solid or rebuilding the shape for you.
Why there is no uploader on this page
STL is a closed format that no browser can read, so an in-page converter would have to send your file to a server. The procedure below does the job properly in the application that owns the format — and where a browser-side route exists, it is linked underneath.

- 1Fastest honest route: Fusion 360 → Insert Mesh → Mesh tab → Convert Mesh → Prismatic (for machined parts) or Faceted, then export STEP. Works well for low-poly, flat-faced parts.
- 2For organic or scanned shapes: use Autodesk ReCap/Fusion's reverse-engineering tools, SolidWorks ScanTo3D, or Geomagic to fit surfaces to the mesh.
- 3For a functional part that has to be dimensioned and tolerance-checked: remodel it from measurements. Faster and safer than fighting a fitted surface.
- 4Confirm units before conversion — STL has none, so a 25.4x scale error is the most common failure.
- 5Export STEP AP214 or AP242 for best downstream compatibility.

- A 'faceted solid' STEP has thousands of planar faces. CAM and FEA tools will choke on it, and no one can edit it.
- Prismatic conversion has vertex limits; decimate the mesh before converting.
- If the mesh is not watertight, repair it first — solid conversion needs a closed volume.

Is there a free STL to STEP converter?
Fusion 360's personal-use licence and FreeCAD's Part workbench both do it. Quality depends entirely on the mesh, not on the price of the tool.
Why does my converted STEP fail in CAM?
Almost always a faceted conversion: thousands of tiny planar faces instead of real surfaces. Re-do it with prismatic conversion or remodel.
