Tile calculator — tiles and boxes for a floor or wall

Enter the area in square metres, the tile size in millimetres and the grout joint. The result is an area-based estimate for one rectangular area; patterns, borders and cuts can need more.

Formula

tiles = ceil(area × (1 + waste/100) ÷ [(L + joint)(W + joint) ÷ 1,000,000]) · boxes = ceil(tiles ÷ tiles per box)

The 10% allowance is an editable assumption; diagonal or herringbone layouts often need more. Buy from one batch where colour matters.

Questions

How many tiles do I need per square metre?

Divide 1 m² by one tile's area including the joint. For 600 × 300 mm tiles with a 3 mm joint, that is about 5.47 tiles per m², before waste.

How much extra tile should I buy?

10% is a common planning assumption for straight layouts; complex patterns and many cuts need more. Confirm with your installer.

Can I use feet?

Convert your area with the m² ↔ ft² converter and tile sizes with inches-to-mm first.
